In designing this Spanish/English bilingual book of poetry, we sought to feature both languages in a way that would reflect the author’s creative process. The book reflects the artform—words expressing loss and longing with the author’s paintings providing the backdrop. Typography, typesetting, page shape and negative space all sat in the forefront of consideration. In addition to prioritizing the physical experience of the text, we used the artworks as illustrations, their abstract nature complimenting but still sitting second to the poetry itself. This book is an example of how we use meaning and intention to inform design.
